Delta Blue Carbon
On October 10th, 2024, ASJ participated in the auction for the world’s largest blue carbon project—Delta Blue Carbon. This groundbreaking project focuses on mangrove restoration in the Indus River Delta, Pakistan, covering 350,000 hectares. Over its 60-year lifespan, from February 19, 2015, to February 18, 2075, it is estimated to remove over 142 million tons of CO2 equivalent (tCO2e). The Indus Delta features the largest arid climate mangrove forests globally, situated along a major migratory route for thousands of birds.
Mangroves are critical for climate adaptation, capable of sequestering five times more carbon than tropical forests. Despite their importance, 67% of mangroves worldwide have been lost or degraded, with only 147,000 km² remaining—an area similar to Bangladesh.
The Delta Blue Carbon project not only protects and restores these vital ecosystems but also improves the livelihoods of over 42,000 people living in 60 coastal villages, 70% of whom live below the poverty line. These communities face limited access to clean drinking water, education, healthcare, and are heavily dependent on agriculture. Rising salinity has worsened conditions for agriculture and coastal fisheries, impacting the local economy.
Beyond environmental restoration, the project addresses 13 out of 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by engaging local communities in planning and execution. Initiatives such as Mangrove Stewardship Agreements provide jobs and promote sustainable management. The project also improves education, healthcare, access to clean water, law enforcement, and microfinancing, while promoting gender equality and conservation of cultural heritage.
Key highlights and advantages:
Strong carbon sequestration capacity: Blue carbon ecosystems, such as mangroves, salt marshes, and seagrass beds, sequester significantly more carbon than terrestrial forests. These ecosystems store carbon for centuries in sediments, making them crucial natural carbon sinks. Supporting such projects helps buyers offset their emissions.
Biodiversity conservation: Blue carbon ecosystems are biodiversity hotspots, home to a wide variety of species. Investing in their conservation helps preserve critical habitats and supports sustainable ecosystem management, preventing ecological imbalances.
Economic and social benefits for coastal communities: These projects often work with local communities, creating jobs and enhancing livelihoods by restoring and protecting coastal ecosystems. They also increase resilience against climate change and natural disasters.
Multiple climate adaptation functions: In addition to carbon sequestration, blue carbon ecosystems mitigate coastal erosion, reduce storm surges, and provide natural defenses, making them essential to climate adaptation strategies.
Internationally recognized carbon credits: Verified under the VCS (Verified Carbon Standard), these carbon credits are rigorously measured and reported, ensuring transparency and reliability. They can be traded globally or used to offset emissions, offering trusted tools for carbon reduction.
