Preparing the Next Generation for Family Wealth
From Wealth Transfer to Next-Generation Readiness
When thinking about family succession, first-generation entrepreneurs often assume:
“I have already provided sufficient assets for the next generation. Their future should be secure.”
Yet the real challenge of succession may begin precisely at this point.
For many members of the next generation, the greatest risk is not a lack of assets to inherit. The more important question is whether they are truly prepared when wealth, business ownership and family responsibilities gradually pass into their hands.
Are they ready to take on that responsibility?
As the next generation enters adulthood, they may move relatively quickly from being family members to becoming shareholders, directors, or participants in major investment and family decisions.
This means they need to understand far more than how to use wealth. They must learn to navigate the rights, responsibilities and choices that come with it.
True Next-Generation Readiness goes beyond financial literacy. It requires a broader understanding of the family’s wealth, businesses and governance framework.
The next generation may need to develop capabilities in several areas:
Understanding What the Family Owns — Do they understand the basic structure of the family businesses, financial assets, real estate and other investments?
Understanding the Rights and Responsibilities of Ownership — Becoming a shareholder in a family business involves more than economic benefits; it may also carry governance responsibilities and long-term obligations.
Developing Professional Judgment — When working with bankers, lawyers, accountants, trustees and investment advisers, can they understand the information presented, ask the right questions and participate meaningfully in decisions?
Learning Family Communication and Governance — When siblings or different generations have different views about the business or family wealth, can they communicate and make decisions through appropriate governance mechanisms?
Understanding the Values Behind the Wealth — Beyond knowing what the family owns, do they understand how the previous generation created that wealth and what the family ultimately hopes to achieve with it?
Leaving wealth to the next generation and preparing the next generation to manage wealth are two very different things.
A mature Family Office should not focus solely on managing existing assets. It should also consider how the next generation can gradually develop the knowledge, experience and judgment required to participate responsibly in family affairs.
Preparing the next generation does not necessarily mean expecting every family member to take over the family business.
Some may be suited to operating the business, while others may contribute more effectively as shareholders or directors. Some may develop an interest in investment and wealth management, while others may choose entirely different professional and personal paths.
What matters is that, before wealth and responsibility are formally transferred, the next generation has sufficient time to:
Understand · Participate · Learn · Choose
The process may begin with smaller investment decisions and basic financial education, followed by participation in family meetings, greater familiarity with family businesses and asset allocation, learning to read financial information, and developing a basic understanding of investment, legal, trust and governance concepts.
As experience develops, the next generation can gradually participate in more significant family decisions.
This process may take five years, ten years, or even longer.
Good succession is not about handing the next generation the key one day.
It is about making sure they already know how to use it before that day arrives.
First-generation entrepreneurs often spend decades building wealth through entrepreneurship, investment and accumulated life experience.
Learning how to take responsibility for that wealth also takes time.
A Family Office therefore needs to consider the transfer of more than:
Assets
It should also consider:
Knowledge
Understanding how businesses, investments and family wealth operate.
Responsibility
Understanding the governance and decision-making responsibilities associated with wealth and ownership.
Values
Understanding how the family created its wealth and what it hopes to accomplish with that wealth over the long term.
At ASJ Global Group, we believe that effective family succession should begin well before legal documents are signed or assets are transferred.
Next-Generation Development is a long-term process.
Through gradual participation, education, practical experience and intergenerational communication, the next generation can develop the capabilities needed to manage wealth, participate in family businesses and contribute to family governance before assuming greater responsibility.
In this process, the role of a Family Office extends beyond asset management. It can also help establish long-term mechanisms through which different generations continue to communicate, learn and participate in the family’s future.
Wealth can be passed to the next generation. The ability to manage it must be developed in advance.

We Don’t Just Preserve Wealth. We Preserve Legacy.
好的傳承,不是某一天把鑰匙交給下一代;
Assets|資產
Knowledge|
Responsibility|
Values|
ASJ Global Group
Next-Generation Development
Family Office
