ASJ LEGACY SERIES | 05
From Inheritance to Legacy
Why Family Governance Matters
When discussing family wealth, it is easy to treat inheritance and legacy as if they were the same thing.
In reality, they address different questions.
Inheritance focuses primarily on how assets are passed to the next generation.
Legacy goes further by asking how the family will continue to move forward across generations.
Real estate, financial assets and business ownership can be transferred through wills, trusts and other legal and wealth-planning arrangements.
But meaningful family succession involves many questions that cannot be answered by legal documents alone.
As businesses, assets and family structures become more complex, the questions facing a family gradually shift from “How should assets be distributed?” to “How should we govern, communicate and make decisions together?”
Families may need to consider:
Who will manage the family business, and who will remain as shareholders?
Who should make major investment decisions, and how should those decisions be made?
How should disagreements among siblings or different generations be addressed?
How should the next generation gradually participate in business, investment and family affairs?
What values, principles and long-term objectives does the family want to preserve?
Beyond supporting family members, should family wealth also create a broader and more lasting social impact?
These are among the fundamental questions addressed by Family Governance.
When people first encounter the concept of Family Governance, they may assume it means creating extensive rules and making family relationships more formal or complicated.
The purpose is quite the opposite.
Family Governance is about establishing communication, participation and decision-making mechanisms while relationships are strong and different generations are still able to communicate openly.
Depending on the family’s circumstances, these mechanisms may include:
Family Constitution
Family Meetings
Business ownership and governance principles
Family investment and major decision-making frameworks
Next-generation participation and development
Philanthropy, social impact and family mission
The objective is not to create as many rules as possible.
It is to build a shared understanding of several fundamental questions:
What decisions should be made collectively? Who should participate? How should decisions be made?
As families move into the second and third generations, individual members will naturally develop different perspectives on the business, wealth and their own lives.
The first generation may believe:
“This company is the foundation of our family.”
The next generation, however, may see several possible paths. Some may want to operate the family business. Others may be better suited to serving as shareholders or directors. Some may choose entirely different careers and personal directions.
There is no single correct path.
What matters is whether the family has created a framework in which different choices can be expressed, discussed and understood, while still enabling sustainable decision-making when the family’s shared interests are involved.
The value of Family Governance lies in establishing the foundations for those conversations before differences become conflicts.
This is also why a mature Family Office cannot focus solely on asset allocation, trusts or investment management.
Wealth Management manages wealth.
Family Governance manages the relationship between people and wealth.
A comprehensive succession framework needs to consider the relationships among businesses, assets, family members and future generations.
As the first generation gradually steps away from day-to-day business management and wealth decisions, the family’s ability to continue communicating, making decisions and operating according to shared principles may become just as important as the transfer of individual assets.
Entrepreneurs considering succession may therefore want to ask themselves a longer-term question:
If one day I am no longer sitting at the head of the table,
will my family still know how to make decisions together?
If the answer is yes, what has been passed on is more than wealth.
It is a set of structures, values and shared direction that can help the next generation—and the generations after them—continue moving forward together.
At ASJ Global Group, we believe that meaningful family succession should extend beyond the transfer of assets or the establishment of legal structures.
The long-term value of a Family Office lies in helping families consider wealth management, business governance, family communication and next-generation participation within a coherent long-term framework.
Through Family Governance, families can gradually establish clearer roles, communication mechanisms and decision-making principles, helping ensure that as businesses and wealth pass across generations, the family retains the ability to move forward together.
Inheritance passes wealth to the next generation.
Legacy prepares the next generation to carry the family forward.

We Don’t Just Preserve Wealth. We Preserve Legacy.
繼承,主要處理的是「財產如何交給下一代」;
這些問題,正是 Family Governance(家族治理) 所關注的核心。
Family Constitution|
Family Meeting|
Family Governance
Wealth Management 管理的是財富;
Family Governance
ASJ Global Group
Family Office
