Connecting Asian Families with Canada’s Business & Innovation Ecosystem
On May 6, 2025, ASJ met with Michael Rublack of Toronto Global in Taipei to exchange perspectives on Toronto’s business and innovation ecosystem, including its strengths in artificial intelligence, technology, research talent, and business development.
For many entrepreneurs and families who have built their businesses across Asia, their connection with Canada often begins with the next generation’s education and gradually expands into residency, business development, investment, and longer-term family planning. As the next generation establishes deeper roots in Canada, access to local business, technology, and professional networks can become an increasingly important part of the family’s cross-border strategy.
The meeting provided ASJ with further insights into Toronto’s business and innovation ecosystem and the local resources available to Asian entrepreneurs and families seeking to establish deeper connections with Canada.
As a bridge between Canada and Asia, ASJ continues to explore ways to connect the industry experience, capital, and business networks built by Asian families with Canada’s innovation ecosystem, talent, and market opportunities—supporting long-term development across generations and markets.
Cask Strength Whisky —
Alternative Assets, Collectibles & Family Wealth
Taipei | June 5, 2025
Exploring Alternative Assets through a Family Office Perspective
On June 5, 2025, ASJ attended a cask-strength whisky evening in Taipei, combining whisky tasting with discussions on the evolving market for premium whisky, casks, and collectible assets.
From a family office perspective, collectibles such as art, classic cars, watches, fine wine, and whisky can form part of the broader alternative-asset landscape beyond traditional financial investments. Their relevance to private wealth may extend beyond potential financial appreciation to include personal passion, cultural value, lifestyle, and intergenerational legacy.
Whisky represents a distinctive form of tangible collectible asset. Factors including distillery provenance, vintage, scarcity, maturation, storage, insurance, liquidity, and access to secondary markets can all influence long-term value, requiring a different framework from conventional investments such as equities and fixed income.
For ASJ, the evening provided an opportunity to examine collectible assets through a Family Office lens and to better understand how families may consider the intersection of portfolio diversification, passion assets, and intergenerational wealth as part of a broader approach to long-term family wealth.
